Bokfemma - 5 non fiction books
Malin's "bokfemma" (list of five books) this week is to list 5 non-fiction books that you read - might be for hobbies, something that represent your interests. Here is the list of my 5 books that represent things that I work with, things that has been important to me, things that I like to do on my spare time and also things that hopefully will be important to me in a no to distant future.
Fashion Now is a very nice Taschen book that I got as a Christmas gift from my husband. It has short presentations and interviews with a lot (hundreds) of contemporary fashion designers and a few pictures of each designers most important clothes. Great book, I look in it very often.
The Empty Space: A Book About Theatre Deadly, Holy, Rough, Immediate by Peter Brook. A book about theater, what it is and what it does. I read during my studies (I've studied theater and literature), but it is not a heavy theoretical book - it is easy to read and says something very fundamental about this art form. I can highly recommend it to anyone that is interested in theater.
Writing and Difference by Jacques Derrida. I have mentioned Butler in an earlier bokfemman list, so here I opted for another of my heavy league favorites at the university - Derrida. Where as book above was easy to read, this one is almost impossible. Yet very interesting and has made me look at things in a profoundly different way. I find myself coming back to this book often.
Understanding Comics: the Invisible Art by Scott McCloud. I like to read, och draw/write comics. Especially alternative or underground comics, but also a little more mainstream comics. Not so much super heros or funnies, more like Neil Gaiman's Sandman books, Alan Moore's Watchman and others. Understanding explains what comics is and how it works - as opposed to and in relation to literature, art, caricature and animation for ex. Informative, easy to understand book.
Ashatanga Yoga: The Practice Manual by David Swenson. I bought this book recently. The idea was that I would do yoga every morning before work. So far I can tell you that it has great drawings, it is very descriptive and feels good to handle. Very soon I hope I will tell you if it works well in practice as well....
